Bone Health is Important!

by Eric Robert Santiago on 07/03/12

Our 206 bones give our bodies structure and make movement possible. But for postmenopausal women in particular, natural changes in bone physiology can put freedom of movement at risk. Bone Is Continually Changing Contrary to popular notion, bone is a dynamic, living tissue that is constantly undergoing a process called remodeling. Remodeling consists of two major phases: Bone resorption, or breakdown. Bone cells called osteoclasts remove old and damaged bone tissue. Bone formation. Other bone cells called osteoblasts and osteocytes create a new bone matrix (the web-like, micro-architecture of bone), and use calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals to harden the matrix. The Menopausal Effect From birth until about age 40, bone remodeling occurs in relative balance, building bones that are hard, dense, and strong. But menopause marks a major turning point in a woman's bone physiology. The steady decline of estrogen combined with a subtle increase of inflammatory markers after menopause may contribute to an increase in bone resorption. Over time, this can make the bone matrix more and more fragile, resulting in an increased risk of fracture. Why Mineral Supplements May Not Be Enough Calcium, phosphorus, and other trace minerals are essential for maintaining bone density and hardness. But even the highest quality minerals may not work as well on a weak bone matrix. A Natural Approach to Healthy Bone Remodeling Standard approaches to osteoporosis prevention focus on achieving and maintaining peak bone mass or density. But thanks to new scientific developments, we now know that a combination of the following nutrients may target the quality of the bone matrix in women with low estrogen levels: Berberine and reduced iso-alpha acids derived from hops — key botanicals shown to beneficially influence cellular processes involved in bone health Vitamin K — a key nutrient for the metabolism of bone proteins crucial to bone integrity Vitamin D — an important nutrient associated with healthy bone formation and bone mineralization In a recent clinical study of postmenopausal women with low estrogen, these nutrients, together with a Mediterranean-style, low-glycemic-load diet and regular exercise were shown to improve several important indicators of healthy bone remodeling more than the same diet and exercise alone. Furthermore, patients taking these nutrients did not report serious adverse effects associated with some conventional approaches. New Help for Managing Blood Sugar

by Eric Robert Santiago on 07/01/12

The rise in blood sugar after meals can increase insulin resistance. That “sugar rush” we often joke about is serious business. During digestion, carbohydrates are converted into glucose (sugar) and circulated throughout the body, where insulin helps cells absorb it to use as energy. Due to genetic and lifestyle factors, cells can become “resistant” to insulin signals—increasing the risks of developing obesity, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. For those who already have diagnosed insulin resistance conditions, controlling the rise in blood sugar after a meal (the “glycemic response”) is crucial to managing these diseases.

Unfortunately, many conventional approaches for blood sugar control may also cause gastrointestinal discomfort—such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas, and indigestion—and increase the risk of bone fractures and coronary heart failure. That's why many health experts recommend exercise and healthy eating habits—such as eating a low-glycemic-load diet (high fiber/low sugar)—and targeted nutritional support more than ever.

Touchi extract may help control the glycemic response. For centuries, a fermented soybean extract known as touchi has been used in food preparation in China and Japan. Preliminary laboratory and clinical research suggests that a concentrated dose of touchi extract before meals may help reduce the glycemic response in diabetic inviduals—minimizing the rise in blood sugar.† And, best of all, it has an excellent saftey profile with no reports of serious adverse events or stomach discomfort.

Take Control of Cholesterol and Blood Pressure

by Eric Robert Santiago on 06/28/12

Concerned about your blood pressure or cholesterol levels? High blood pressure (hypertension) and blood lipid conditions (high triglycerides; high LDL “bad” cholesterol; low HDL “good” choles...terol) are early steps in the development of more serious diseases (metabolic syndrome, heart disease, type 2 diabetes) or cardiac events. Keeping blood pressure and blood lipids (fats) under control are one of the best health “ensurance” policies you can have.

Personalized nutritional support can help. While genetic factors (like family health history) play a role in developing blood pressure/lipid conditions, they're often preventable, manageable, and even reversible. Leading health organizations now recommend changing lifestyle habits—reducing body fat, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, managing stress, and eating healthy—before trying more aggressive therapeutic agents that can lead to serious adverse events with long-term use. Nutritional recommendations, such as concentrated fish oil supplements and condition-specific medical foods, are designed to make lifestyle recommendations for these conditions work even better...and faster!

Get some helpful advice and support. When it comes to improving chronic disease risk factors, it's hard to know what steps to take on your own. What should you eat? What nutritional supplements do you need? Where can you get them? We can help you go in the right direction. In fact, research often shows greater success for patients who have support and guidance from a healthcare professional than for those who try to go it alone.

Hey Sports Fans! How to recover from old sports injuries....

by Eric Robert Santiago on 06/27/12

Growing up in Lake Ronkonkoma, NY in the 1960's, our winter passion was ice hockey. We just couldn't get enough of the sport. Unfortunately, back then there was no place to skate other then the lake and the local ponds which meant that our playing time was determined by the temperature outside. However, as soon as the ice froze, we were skating, from dusk til dawn.

During one particularly grueling battle, my blade got caught in a crack in the ice and I tore my meniscus.... 40 years later, when it rains, I swear I can still feel the tear.

If you’re a weekend warrior, enjoy gardening, or engage in any other occasional physical exertion, then you may know what it’s like to experience a soft tissue injury, such as a sprain, strain, muscle pull, or tear. But if those old aches and pains keep coming back, or if you have a tendency to reinjure the same spot, then the chances are you never fully recovered in the first place.

Why You Shouldn’t Stop Treatment Too Early

Most people mistakenly believe that once the pain subsides, they’re fully healed. But by stopping the recovery process too early, they may be setting themselves up for future health issues, like those recurring aches and pains, reinjury, side effects from painkillers, or even worse, the need for surgery.

In reality, the body goes through 3 phases on the road to soft tissue injury recovery. To completely recover, it’s necessary to address all 3. Fortunately, they can be addressed naturally through the right chiropractic care and targeted nutrients.

The Three Phases of Injury Recovery

  • Phase 1 – Acute Care (1-3 days). In the first few days after injury, inflammation, the body’s natural defense mechanism is activated. Inflammation causes the discomfort and swelling with which most people are familiar with. The therapeutic goal during this phase is to reduce discomfort, spasm, and swelling with chiropractic care and nutrients such as turmeric, boswellia, ginger, proteolytic enzymes, magnesium, calcium, passionflower, and valerian.
  • Phase 2 – Sub-acute care (day 4 through a minimum of 6 weeks). During the sub-acute phase, tissue repair begins. The therapeutic goal becomes improving range of motion through chiropractic care plus nutrients such as iso-alpha-acids from hops, zinc, and berberine.
  • Phase 3 – Wellness care (6 weeks and beyond). By this phase, you should be in good health and at lower risk for reinjury. And if you do reinjure yourself, you’ll recover much easier and faster. The therapeutic goal at this phase is to promote long-term health through moderate exercise, a healthy diet, and supplementation with high potency multivitamins, essential fatty acids (fish oil), and phytonutrients.

It’s Time for Complete Recovery

In summary, if you’ve been sidelined with recurring aches and pains from old injuries or continue reinjuring the same area, it’s time to get back on the road to full recovery.

Build a Better Foundation with a Personal Touch

by Eric Robert Santiago on 06/22/12

Everyone's daily nutritional regimen shouldn't be the same. Though adults may share similar intake requirements (RDIs) of essential vitamins/minerals, it's clear that a "one size fits all" approach to daily nutritional supplementation falls short of what many individuals require. For example, it's difficult or impossible to combine significant levels of health-promoting fish oils and beneficial nutrients in the same delivery system, such as a single tablet. But even packet products that combine a daily multi and a concentrated omega-3 supplement may fail to provide forward-thinking foundation nutritionor personalized support.

Consider a new health "insurance" policy. Many traditional multis are "insurance policies" to help meet daily RDIs for essential nutrients, which scientific opinion now suggests may be inadequate support for both wellness and healthy aging. There's a growing recognition of the value of dietary phytonutrients, secondary metabolites of bioactive compounds in plants that help them adapt to stressors and stay healthy. Similarly, phytonutrients have also been shown to support the human body in multiple ways, beginning with their influence at the cellular level to communicate healthy messages throughout the body.

Where most multivitamin/minerals fall short. You may have areas of health that require additional targeted support, such as your joints, bones, blood sugar, or immune system. Men and women in various life stages, such as pregnancy and menopause, also need specialized support. No daily multi or packet product designed for a mass audience can deliver all that.
